The raids continued daily, and Maisonneuve ordered all the colonists in Ville-Marie to abandon their homes. Everyone was forced to stay in the Fort. At least a hundred soldiers were needed to protect the settlement, but Ville-Marie had only seventeen trained men. Maisonneuve was adamant: new recruits from France were vital. But who would pay for them? The little settlement seemed doomed.

“Every person was discouraged,” wrote Jeanne. “I felt what a loss it would be to religion and what a disgrace for the State if it had to lose the colony after all we had done; I therefore urged Maisonneuve to go to France for help.”

If the colony could not survive, Jeanne reasoned, neither could the hospital. She made a bold decision and gave Maisonneuve the money, 22,000 livres reserved for the hospital ($150,000 dollars in today’s money but worth much more then). The money, she explained, was to be used to hire recruits. Yet Jeanne did not stop there. She felt that, just this once, she might have to break her oath. The “unknown benefactress” of Ville-Marie, she confided to Maisonneuve, was the wealthy Parisian widow, Madame de Bullion.
